Why 13 Notes?
- The Bass Advantage: Unlike standard 11-note drums, the 13-note layout typically extends down to the Low 3 (Mi). This adds significant warmth and depth to melodies.
- Full Octave Freedom: You have a complete middle octave plus extended low and high notes, perfect for songs with wider emotional ranges like "Hallelujah."
- Standard C Major: The tabs below are written for C Major, the most common tuning for 13-note "Lotus" drums.
The 13-note steel tongue drum is a fascinating instrument. From a tuning perspective, it occupies a unique "middle ground" between the standard 11-note beginner drum and the 15-note professional drum.
Its hidden superpower is the Low Range. Most 13-note drums add a Low 3 and Low 4, allowing you to play chords and basslines that feel grounded and full. To help you utilize this range, I have arranged three complete songs that test the full capabilities of your instrument.
1. The 13-Note Notation Map
Before we play, confirm your notation. We are using the standard Numbered Notation (Jianpu).
Tip: The lyrics below the numbers guide your rhythm. If the word is stretched, let the note ring.
2. Ode to Joy (Beethoven)
We start with a classic. This song sits mostly in the Middle Octave but uses the Low 5 for the turnaround. It’s perfect for learning the layout of your new drum.
3. Castle in the Sky (Laputa)
This melody is the holy grail for tongue drum players. It is hauntingly beautiful and specifically requires the High 3 and the Low 6, making it ideal for a 13-note instrument. Take this one slow and focus on the flow.

4. Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)
This soulful ballad relies on a "waltz" feel (1-2-3, 1-2-3). It uses the Low 6 and Low 5 to build tension in the verse before rising to the chorus. Let the "Hallelujah" chorus ring out on the high notes.
5. Mastering the 13-Note Layout
Playing a 13-note drum can sometimes feel confusing because of the "Inner Ring" vs. "Outer Ring" setup.
The Trick: Think of the outer ring as your "Melody Zone" (Mid and High notes) and the inner ring as your "Bass Zone" (Low notes). When playing "Hallelujah," you will find yourself dipping into that inner ring for the verses and expanding to the outer ring for the chorus. This physical movement matches the emotional arc of the song.
